The Newton Public Library has had an eventful October, offering educational programs, community initiatives, and family-friendly activities. Recently, two unique historical presentations drew local audiences. On October 14, Iowa author and journalist Darcy Maulsby captivated 62 attendees with "Iowa's Lost Titanic History," a presentation that connected Iowa's history to the Titanic tragedy. Later, on October 17, historian Kathy Wilson spoke to an audience of 50 on "The Salem Witch Trials: History and Hysteria," sharing insights into this gripping moment in early American history.
The library also welcomed Dr. Jacob Parsons from Hometown Dental of Newton for a special Storytime event on October 22. Dr. Parsons shared essential tips for kids on dental care, teaching them about brushing for two minutes and the importance of adult supervision in early years. The young attendees left with toothbrushes and new knowledge about oral hygiene.
In literacy milestones, Maren Rose, just 2½ years old, completed the library's 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Maren's favorite book during her journey was "Dandy" by Anne Dyckman. For completing the program, she received a bag of items to prepare her for kindergarten along with a book to keep. Daily reading at home is shown to foster early academic success, and Maren is well on her way!
The library's festive book character pumpkin contest is open for voting through October 31. Visitors are invited to view the creative pumpkins on display and cast a vote for their favorites once a day.
Finally, from October 28 to November 2, the library will be collecting gently used books for its upcoming book swap event. For each book dropped off in good condition, patrons will receive a swap ticket. They can then redeem tickets on Monday, November 4, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., to pick up "new" books from the swap selection. All books should be intact, clean, and free from significant markings. For questions, contact Becca Klein at 641-792-4108.
The Newton Public Library continues to offer a diverse array of programs and events, encouraging community engagement and lifelong learning.
