On October 24, 2024, Main Street America conducted an accreditation visit in Newton, focusing on the city's efforts and community involvement in revitalizing its downtown area. As one of the first cities to be assessed under new accreditation criteria, Newton had the opportunity to participate in a full day of meetings and training sessions that brought together city staff, elected officials, Main Street board members, and volunteers.
The day began with small group meetings, allowing Main Street America representatives to discuss Newton's progress directly with city leaders and community stakeholders. These sessions helped highlight the City's collaborative efforts in revitalization and identify specific areas for potential growth.
The afternoon featured a specialized training for Main Street board members, city staff, and local volunteers. This training provided attendees with valuable insights into Main Street America's updated standards, further strengthening their understanding of best practices for community and downtown development.
Feedback from Main Street America on Newton's accreditation review is expected in December 2024, giving the city an early glimpse into how it aligns with new standards. The results will offer Newton's Main Street program guidance to continue enhancing the downtown area and fostering local engagement.
