Why SPLASH is One of Boston University's Must-Attend Events

SPLASH is Boston University's version of an involvement fair, but so much better. With over 450 different clubs and organizations affiliated with the University, they all gather at Nickerson Field to share what makes them unique and give potential members the chance to sign up and learn more. From social clubs to club and intramural sports to more pre-professional and academic-centered groups, Nickerson is packed to the brim with tables from each one. Especially for first-year students, SPLASH is an incredible opportunity to explore extracurricular options at BU, meet people, and get accustomed to the campus.

I've experienced Splash as a participant, exploring the clubs, and as a representative, running the table for BU's Women's Club Hockey Team (BUWCH for short). During my first year on campus, my RA organized Splash as a floor event, gathering all the girls from my Warren Towers floor-first-year students-and leading us to West Campus to explore our options. At first, it felt overwhelming, but my excitement took over. My roommate Beya and I walked through every aisle of tables, signing up for over 15 clubs each, many of which still send me emails. It was inspiring to see clubs and groups specifically related to the career I wanted and my passions, which I didn't have access to in high school. Only about two or three of these organizations stuck for each of us, but these groups are how I made friends and gained experiences, especially during that first year.

SPLASH is one of the most impressive displays of BU's size, yet it somehow made me feel more comfortable on campus as if I had a finger on the pulse of what was happening up and down Comm Ave each week. SPLASH also gave my friends and me things to do, like discovering Liquid Fun, one of BU's student comedy groups, and student-run theatre productions that we made a point to attend throughout the semester. It's so fun to see the sheer talent and personalities that make up our school, and I'll be forever grateful that SPLASH introduced me to some of my favorite campus activities.

Now, as an upperclassman, I love participating in SPLASH in an entirely new way. For the 2023-24 season, I was the Social Media Manager for my hockey team, which included running our table at SPLASH. It was an absolute blast. We handed out stickers, played music, danced on tables, and met many new people interested in trying out for the team. Seeing the girls I chatted with at tryouts the following week was incredibly gratifying, and it felt rewarding to be a familiar face when they first showed up at Walter Brown Arena.

If you're an incoming first-year student, make sure to attend SPLASH! SPLASH is an absolute must, even if you already know what you want to get involved in or aren't particularly interested in. Stay open to BU's opportunities and be curious about what's happening around campus. Every student chart their own path at Boston University, and you can't do that unless you know what's out there.
