We're at the end of the first week of school, popularly known as "syllabus week" (when professors will usually give an overview of a class)-probably the only week of the entire semester when students don't have homework. We advise taking advantage of all the events the city has to offer, including Weeks of Welcome events, outdoor markets, art exhibitions, and even a carnival.

Somerville Mobile Farmers Market

Looking for some fresh produce and an opportunity to expand your horizons beyond the dining hall? This Somerville Mobile Farmers Market frequents different Somerville locations throughout the weekend (find them here) and offers an assortment of seasonal vegetables and fruits. Soak up the beautiful fall weather and the delicious produce that comes with it while you can.

Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through October 26; times and locations vary and can be found here.

BU Weeks of Welcome: Marsh Chapel Garden Party

The end of summer doesn't have to be the end of fun. Join the dean of Marsh Chapel for iced teas, snacks, and games.

Thursday, September 5, 4:30 pm, 735 Commonwealth Ave. (Marsh Plaza), and 270 Bay State Road (BU Beach). This event is free.

BU Weeks of Welcome: Night of Lights

Kick off the weekend with this nocturnal event. The BU Beach will be decked out with glow-in-the-dark swings, lawn games, and music to create a vibrant atmosphere for both new and returning undergrads.

Thursday, September 5, 8 to 11 pm, 270 Bay State Road (BU Beach). This event is free; BU undergrads only.

BU Weeks of Welcome: 2024 Fall Arts Fair

The BU Arts Initiative pairs with BU's arts programs and Boston art organizations to share special student discounts, offers, and internship opportunities. Attendees can also enter their name in a giveaway for two Nutcracker tickets.

Friday, September 6, 11 am to 2 pm, GSU Plaza. This event is free.

BU Weeks of Welcome: Welcome Back Bash

Join new and returning Terriers for this dance party. This bash is a great way to start the semester and see some familiar (and new) faces.

Friday, September 6, 8 to 11 pm, 270 Bay State Road (BU Beach). This event is free; BU undergrads only.

First Fridays: Fire, Wind + Earth

Immerse yourself in contemporary arts with the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston's final outdoor event of the season. This nature-themed event features a waterfront view of the Boston Seaport and includes DJs Towfu and Mozes, craft activities, and live music from Mint Green. Attendees are encouraged to dress in "atmospheric ensemble"-meaning reds, blues, and earth tones.

Friday, September 6, 5:30 to 9:30 pm, 25 Harbor Shore Drive, Boston. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door, and free for ICA members. Purchase here. These events tend to sell out, so be sure to buy a ticket in advance.

BU Weeks of Welcome: Splash

Want to explore your interests and discover all that BU has to offer? Head on over to Nickerson Field for the highly anticipated Splash, BU's semiannual club fair involving 450-plus student organizations. From language clubs to a cappella groups to business and community service fraternities, you are guaranteed to find a place for your niche interests. Just be prepared in advance because this event can get very crowded.

Saturday, September 7, noon to 2 pm, Nickerson Field. This event is free.

Seaport Summer Market

Seaport is well-known for its annual "Snowport" winter market, complete with food, music, and unique shopping finds. Not surprisingly, its summer counterpart holds the same appeal. Catering to a variety of ages and interests, this market features pop-up shops, an outdoor eating area, a Boston Children's Museum pop-up, a DJ, and a variety of games for shoppers to enjoy.

Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, 11 am to 7 pm, 88 Seaport Blvd., Boston. This event is free; payment is required for individual purchases.

10th Annual Evolution of Hip Hop Festival

Get your groove on with this virtual arts showcase spotlighting local hip-hop artists and dancers. A series of vintage cars will offer an eye-catching photo op, and there will also be visual artists and craft vendors in attendance.

Saturday, September 7, 4 to 7 pm, Somerville Avenue, Union Square, Somerville. This event is free.

Cambridge Carnival

Cambridge will commemorate 30 years of celebrating African and Caribbean traditions and festivities with its annual Cambridge Carnival. The main event is a parade, with dancers sporting feathers, brightly colored clothes, and handmade jewelry making their way from the Charles River to the University Park Commons. Performers include puppeteers and a steel orchestra, and there'll be kids' entertainment. Vendors will also be available.

Sunday, September 8, 11 am to 5 pm; find the parade route here; it kicks off at Pacific Park, 100 Pacific St., Cambridge. This event is free.
