Kaptur Secures $600,000 Award to Bolster Sandusky’s Vision for Safer StreetsPress ReleaseJobs and the Economy

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, announced that the City of Sandusky has been awarded $600,000 from the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) initiative. This award will advance Sandusky's efforts to create safer, more navigable streets through a comprehensive approach. The funding will support the city's development of a Safety Action Plan, which includes a pilot speed management program and the establishment of new complete street guidelines. The funding award follows a previous $400,000 award in SS4A funding received by Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, and Sandusky Counties in the first round of SS4A funding in February 2023, and a subsequent $24.5 Million award in August 2024.

This SS4A award will enable Sandusky to advance its efforts to implement comprehensive "complete street" guidelines and conduct demonstration activities focused on traffic calming and speed management. Specifically, Sandusky plans to pilot new traffic-calming tools, including speed tables, dynamic feedback signs, and a 40-foot neckdown to reduce excessive speeding in key areas. These demonstration activities are part of a larger safety action plan aiming to mitigate traffic risks, reduce accident rates, and create a safer environment for all who travel Sandusky's streets.

"Improving safety for walkers, bikers and drivers who live in and visit Sandusky is an important part of building for a brighter future. This award is about more than just concrete and asphalt infrastructure - it's about preserving lives and creating enhanced community spaces that are safe," said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "Ground-level investment in Sandusky's Safe Streets initiative will allow community leaders to meet the pressing needs of today while paving the way for a safer, more unified tomorrow."

The SS4A program, administered through the Office of the Secretary of Transportation, aims to fund critical projects nationwide that prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries, especially in high-risk areas. This award is part of an ongoing initiative by the USDOT to support local efforts that prioritize the safety and wellbeing of community members through modernized infrastructure and strategic safety planning. This funding highlights the importance of investing in preventative measures that support a sustainable, people-centered approach to transportation infrastructure.
