Dear Western Community,
We are pleased to inform you about a new initiative to enhance the safety and well-being of our campus community. Starting this fall, Naloxone (commonly known by the brand name Narcan), an opioid reversal medication, will be available at several locations across campus. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, potentially saving lives. By working together, we can foster a safer and more supportive environment for everyone on campus.
Naloxone (nasal spray) will be available through various campus resources, including the Student Health Center, Counseling and Wellness Center, Viking Union, Western Libraries (near the AED Case), and Residence Halls. University Police Officers also carry naloxone. Later this fall, Naloxone will be accessible free of charge from vending machines in the Campus Services Building and Viking Union.
Training on administering Naloxone and using Fentanyl Test Strips is available upon request through the Counseling and Wellness Center's Outreach Request Form.
The WA Department of Health also provides written and video instructionson administering naloxone as well as live virtual trainings.
Washington has a Good Samaritan lawwhich provides that seeking medical assistance for someone experiencing a drug-related overdose shall not be charged or prosecuted for possession of a controlled substance. More information is available here.
