TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Multiple Lane Closures on Old Poydras Street from S. Broad Avenue to S. Galvez Street Through End of Year

The City of New Orleans announced that effective immediately, the Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, Barriere Construction Co., LLC, has begun alternating lane closures on Old Poydras Street between S. Broad Avenue and S. Galvez Street as part of an infrastructure improvement project.

Closure Schedule (Weather Dependent):

  • Full Closure (Nov 6 - Nov 8): Old Poydras Street will be fully closed from S. Broad Avenue to S. Galvez Street to allow for brick removal
  • Partial Opening (Nov 8 - Late Nov): One lane will open river bound for approximately two weeks to facilitate curb work

  • Full Closure (Late Nov - Late Dec): Old Poydras Street will return to a full closure for roadway patching, followed by milling and overlay operations. The street is expected to reopen to traffic by the end of the year

Drivers traveling on Poydras Street are advised to make a left on S. Galvez Street and a right on Julia Street to navigate around the closure. See map.

Safety remains the City's top priority. Signage and traffic control measures, including barrels and fencing, will be installed to guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area.

This work is part of DPW 772: Central Business District (CBD) Asphalt Right of Way Improvement Project, managed by Barriere Construction Co., LLC. The project scope varies by block and includes milling, overlay, and sidewalk repairs across the Central Business District. Crews are working Monday through Friday, with weekend work as necessary. Please note that construction schedules are weather dependent, and any significant weather delays may adjust the completion timeline. Project completion is expected by January 2025, weather permitting.

Since May 2018, DPW has completed 217 infrastructure projects, valued at approximately $1.12 billion. Currently, 34 projects are underway, with an estimated total value of nearly $553 million.
