Celebrate a milestone: $1 million in charitable care

A puppy abandoned by the side of a road, so sick that she can't keep food down.

An emotional support dog needing multiple surgeries for tumors.

A beloved family cat with a bullet wound caused by a neighbor.

A military veteran's trusty dog, viciously attacked by another animal.

These are just a few of the pets whose stories of struggle have had happy endings thanks to caring veterinary teams and donors to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF).

Through the AVMF's REACH program, these animals-and many, many more-have been able to get the urgent medical care they needed, despite living with owners facing financial struggles.

The REACH program recently achieved an important milestone, providing over $1 million in funding for charitable veterinary care that has helped more than 1,000 pets and their families.

Meet Brooklyn

It was Brooklyn, a spirited 2-year-old Maltese, whose case put the REACH program over the $1 million funding mark.

Brooklyn's owner found her unresponsive and took her to Carolina Veterinary Specialists, where Dr. Kelly McClure diagnosed a serious stomach illness that required extensive treatment. Brooklyn's owner, however, had recently lost their job and couldn't afford the care.

Dr. McClure's team decided to go ahead with the treatment anyway and reached out to the AVMF for funding assistance through REACH. Thanks to the veterinary team and the generosity of the AVMF's donors, Brooklyn is back to her playful, loving self.

Just how much does Brooklyn mean to her family? "I affectionately justify spoiling her with hugs, saying, 'It's necessary therapy!' " her owner said.

Thank you, REACH donors!

Brooklyn's story is representative of the many pets and families who have been helped through REACH. The REACH program's funding milestone wouldn't have been possible without the generous contributions of donors, including Purina.

Together, through the AVMF, the veterinary community gives pets like Brooklyn a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
