When marginalized communities such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) communities, women, persons with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities and young people participate equally in politics, it results in tangible gains for democracy and political parties become more responsive to citizens. Political parties have a responsibility to provide safe spaces for LGBTQI+ people to meaningfully engage in politics but many have limited experience and knowledge on how to include and provide safe spaces for these persons. There is also a lack of existing forums and guidance for assessing and discussing LGBTQI+ political party inclusion strategies. In response to this, the National Democratic Institute's Political Parties Team has created a tool that provides assessment strategies and best practices for participation of LGBTQI+ persons in political parties.
