Jamaica Plain Officers Recovered a Firearm After a Traffic Stop

At about 12:39 PM, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, officers assigned to District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) arrested Kirby Wideman, 39, of Roxbury, on multiple firearm charges.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Columbus Avenue observed a motor vehicle operating erratically. Officers activated their marked cruiser's emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop in the area of 87 Mozart Street.

Officers made contact with the operator of the vehicle and requested that he roll the windows down as the tint was extremely dark. The suspect rolled the windows down about five inches. Officers could observe two other occupants inside the vehicle and requested the windows to be rolled down completely. Officers observed a child in the back seat of the vehicle. The suspect once again refused officers orders, and he was requested to exit the vehicle. The suspect put the vehicle in drive and fled the traffic stop.

Officers broadcasted a description of the fleeing vehicle and where the vehicle was registered. Officers were able to locate the vehicle in the area of 20 Amory Avenue, and were able to place the suspect into handcuffs.

Simultaneously officers were advised by Boston Police Operations that a firearm was located in the area of 6 Preising Street. Officers were told by a 911 caller that he observed the suspect throw the firearm out of the vehicle. The firearm was later determined to be a Smith and Wesson M&P with one round in the chamber and eight rounds in the magazine.

Wideman was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony Subsequent Offense, Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Firearm without an FID Card Subsequent Offense, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Third Offense, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition Subsequent Offense, Improper Storage of a Firearm, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Permit Injury to a Child, Reckless Endangerment of a Child, Resisting Arrest, Fail to Stop for Police, Inference with a Police Officer, Fail to Obey a Lawful Command of a Police Officer, Violation of a Restraining Order, and Disorderly Conduct. The suspect also received multiple Massachusetts motor vehicle citations. He is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
