Holiday tradition “Messiah” slated for McMahon Auditorium

One of the oldest holiday traditions in southwest Oklahoma returns to the McMahon Auditorium as the Lawton Schubert Music Club and the Cameron University/Lawton Civic Chorus present Handel's "Messiah" on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The Lawton Schubert Music Club initiated the first performance of "Messiah" in Lawton in December 1941. Presented in a variety of settings, it has become a performance tradition during the Christmas season in the greater Lawton/Fort Sill area. The stage will be filled with a chorus of more than 80 singers representing 30 different church congregations and orchestra for this 83rd annual performance.

Featured soloists include Cameron University associate professor/Joye W. Lentz Endowed Professor Dr. Christian Morren, adjunct professor Khalil Cabrera-Tosado, CU alumni Samantha Cook, Alyson Hays Bishop, Kirk Prucha and Troy Hamiliton; and community member Tia Johnson. "Messiah" is conducted by Doris Lambert, adjunct instructor at Cameron University and director of choral music at the New Post Chapel.

"Messiah" was composed by George F. Handel for chorus, soloists and orchestra. The one-hour performance will feature selections from each of the three portions of the Biblical text lyricized by Charles Jennings, representing the prophecy, the life, death, resurrection and promised return of Jesus Christ.
