Boosting counterterrorism capabilities: EU's impactful Forensic Training in Iraq

The event was coordinated by the EU-funded CT JUST: Criminal Justice Responses to Terrorism project, the EU Delegation in Iraq, and the EU Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq). This training, part of the 2024-2026 Biannual Training and Capacity Building Plan, aimed to elevate the Iraqi police's forensic capabilities to international standards.

The training focused on modern forensic practices, including advanced evidence collection, scene security, and the use of innovative photographic and video techniques. Participants engaged in both theoretical and practical exercises, significantly enhancing their skills in crime scene management and the use of modern forensic tools. Specialised sessions introduced technologies such as 360-degree panoramic photography and 3D forensic mapping, vital for up-to-date forensic investigations.

The officers appreciated the training's role in strengthening their professional capabilities and fostering collaboration. Discussions emphasised the importance of maintaining the chain of custody for evidence, crucial for its admissibility in court.

The initiative concluded successfully, promoting a collaborative spirit among Iraqi Ministry of Interior agencies and highlighting the EU's integrated support approach to Iraq. This training not only improved technical and investigative skills but also reinforced adherence to human rights and international legal standards, marking a significant step forward in Iraq's counterterrorism efforts.
