Firefighters Investigate Smoke, Find Small Fire in 232 Seeley Rd

Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 8:28 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 232 Seeley Rd, on the City's East Side. Firefighters from Station 17, on S Midler Ave., arrived at the scene in just over two minutes. Smoke was present in the street, and while investigating, smoke was seen coming from a one-story building. The first arriving companies investigated further as additional units arrived at the scene and quickly realized that there was a fire in the basement of the building. The incident commander immediately transmitted a signal '99', indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses into the basement where the fire was located, other teams of firefighters continued their search of the entire building. Crews were able to get water on the fire and stop it from spreading to the rest of the house. As other crews moved hoses to different parts of the structure to check for any fire spread, search teams were able to confirm that there was no one in the building. The fire was knocked down in approximately ten minutes from dispatch. The checking for hot spots and clearing of smoke from the building was completed in another twenty minutes. Crews remain on the scene assisting the fire investigator.

The basement suffered fire, smoke, and water damage; other parts suffered smoke damage. It is unknown how many people live at the residence. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the fire began in the basement. The cause is still under investigation. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported to Fire Department personnel.

A total of 35 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
