Safety Guidelines

When driving through these intersections, follow these safety guidelines.

Always treat the intersection as a 4-way or all-way stop.

  • The first vehicle to come to a complete stop at the intersection goes first.

  • If two vehicles arrive and stop at the same time, the one on the right goes first.

  • If two vehicles stop at the intersection at about the same time and are facing each other, the one making a left turn yields to the one going straight through. Otherwise, both vehicles proceed straight through at the same time.

  • In all cases, yield to pedestrians.

  • Before entering the intersection, be sure other approaching vehicles are following the rules and coming to a complete stop.

What should drivers do when a traffic signal is flashing?

When a traffic signal malfunctions, or is in need of repair but still has power, it will often revert to a flashing mode. Sometimes all directions will flash with a red light, and sometimes 1-2 directions may flash with a yellow light. When you approach a signal light that is flashing red, you must come to a complete stop; you can proceed with caution to enter the intersection once it's clear. When you approach a signal light that is flashing yellow, you should approach with caution, driving slowly and stopping if necessary to avoid any other vehicles that are in the intersection.
