Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to discuss Circular Economy relating to Waste Sector

8 Jul 2024, 15:25

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 9 July, to discuss the Circular Economy as it relates to the Waste Sector.

The meeting at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions to hear from representatives from:

11am - Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), FÓRSA and Dublin City Council Working Group.

12:30pm - County and City Management Association (CCMA/LGMA) and Irish Waste Management Association (IWMA).

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: "The Committee has held a series of meetings on the development of the Circular Economy and we will now conclude our examination with the waste management sector.

"The 2018 EU landfill directive requires member states to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill by 10 per cent by 2035. As a model for the reduction of waste through extended product life cycles, the Circular Economy is crucial in helping Ireland's to fulfil international obligations on waste management.

"In order to examine how the Circular Economy might develop to meet this challenge, the Committee will hear from the Dublin City Council Working Group on the (re)municipalisation of waste management, SITPU, FÓRSA, the Local Government Management Agency, the County and City Management Association and the Irish Waste Management Association."

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on OireachtasTV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
