Cool Zone Locations & Hot Weather Safety Tips

Summer weather is here and Poway has two designated Cool Zones if you need to escape the heat.

The Cool Zones program is an established network of sites for older adults, persons with disabilities, or anyone looking to escape the extreme heat during the summer. Cool Zones are free, located throughout San Diego County, and a way for residents to lower individual utility usage and help conserve energy for the whole community.

The lounge at the Mickey Cafagna Community Center in Community Park is open for all to use 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are also drop-in games and bring-your-own craft sessions in the lounge as part of the community center's Older Adult activities . The Poway Community Library (check their website for current hours) is also designated a Cool Zone in this program managed by the County's Aging & Independence Services in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric.

Extreme Heat Quick Tips (Cal OES/Listos California)

Watch for signs of heat illness; keep cool; look out for others.

Safety Tips to Prepare for Heat

During a heat event, avoid strenuous activity and direct exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day, specifically from 12 to 6 p.m.

Hiking in the Heat

As the temperature soars, so does the number of heat-related incidents on Poway's 78 miles of trails. Whether it's strolling along an urban trail along a creek or tackling the rising elevation at of Mt. Woodson, hikers need to be prepared.
