NOPD Investigates Officer Involved Shooting

The New Orleans Police Department's Public Integrity Bureau Force Investigation Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday night (September 7, 2024) shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the 3200 block of Bienville Street.

According to investigators, First District officers responded to a domestic battery call at the location. Upon arrival, an officer encountered an armed suspect and immediately ordered him to drop his weapon. The suspect refused to comply with the officer's commands, resulting in a gunfight between the suspect and the officer. During the exchange, the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his body.

The suspect was later identified as 29-year-old Justin Martin.

A responding officer who is an Emergency Medical Responder provided immediate life-saving aid on Martin until Emergency Medical Technicians arrived and transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.

The preliminary investigation indicates that this incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Martin is being charged with Domestic Battery, Aggravated Assault against a Peace Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

None of the responding officers were injured.

Both the Independent Police Monitor (IPM) and the Federal Monitor were on scene to oversee and monitor the investigation.
