National Park Service Seeking Public Comments on Slough Channelization Draft Environmental Assessment

Date:
September 30, 2024
Contact:Mary Plumb

The National Park Service (NPS) Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is requesting public review and comment on an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze a proposal to pursue options to prevent reproduction of smallmouth bass (SMB) and other warm water non-native fish in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The proposed action would channelize the River Mile -12 slough in order to reduce water temperature and increase water velocity to help eliminate SMB reproduction, which has been documented in this part of the river. The Bureau of Reclamation would fund construction support for this project as a cooperating agency. Public comments will be accepted through Oct. 14, 2024.

The EA has been prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act to provide a decision-making framework that effectively evaluates potential issues and impacts to the area's resources and values. The NPS welcomes public comment submitted online or by mail to: Superintendent, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 1507, Page, Ariz. 86040. Public comments will not be accepted verbally or by fax or email.
