Long Beach, CA- The City of Long Beach invites community members to celebrate the grand opening of the new Junipero Beach Sports Courts, taking place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at 2630 E. Ocean Blvd. The event will feature remarks from Mayor Rex Richardson, Vice Mayor and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen and other City leaders, as well as a ceremonial ribbon cutting followed by open use of the new amenities.

"With the opening of the Junipero Beach Sports Courts, we are not just adding new recreational options for our community to enjoy - we are bringing people together," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "This new amenity will offer our community fun, new ways to stay active and engaged on our beautiful coastline."

The Junipero Beach Sports Courts Project enhances recreational opportunities at one of Long Beach's iconic coastal locations, situated at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Junipero Avenue. The new development includes a dedicated roller-skating area, a full basketball court and integrated seating, complementing the existing half and full basketball courts. These new amenities provide a dynamic space for both residents and visitors of Long Beach to enjoy.

"I am thrilled to celebrate the opening of the Junipero Beach Sports Courts and all the exciting amenities it brings to our community," said Vice Mayor and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen. "I also want to recognize the Coastal Commission and our Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Marine Departments for completing this one-of-a-kind sports facility. We are excited to open our first skate park on the sand, and as a skater myself, I have been waiting to share this experience with family and friends!"

Managed by the Department of Public Works, construction of the upgraded facilities began in January 2024 and was completed in August 2024. Future enhancements will include native dune landscaping and a custom shade structure, further adding to the site's appeal. The Junipero Beach Sports Courts Project is funded by $1 million in Tidelands Capital Improvement funds, of which funds are restricted to improvements along the coast and cannot be used for other purposes, as well as $150,000 recently awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Fund's South Coast Shoreline Parks and Outdoor Recreation Grants Program.
