Traffic Changes on the Margaret Road Intersection Improvement Project as Transition to Newly Aligned Route 422 Begins in Armstrong County

08/14/2024

Indiana, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is alerting motorists to upcoming changes in travel lanes and intersection closures with detours for the Margaret Road Intersection Improvement Project in Plumcreek Township, Armstrong County.

On August 19, the transition to the newly aligned Route 422 will begin. Motorists should be alert to changes in travel lanes and expect delays early in the day as the switch is implemented.

From August 19 through November 15, 2024, Margaret Road, Old Route 422, and Cherry Run Road will be closed at their intersections with Route 422 as reconstruction begins. Traffic will not be able to access Route 422 from Margaret Road or Cherry Run Road.

Margaret Road will be closed from Old 422 to Sunken Valley Road. For the Margaret Road detour, motorists will take Margaret Road to Route 85 to Route 210 to Route 422.

Cherry Run Road will be closed Old 422 to Pyrra Road. The Cherry Run Road detour will take motorists from Cherry Run Road to Mount Union Church Road to Girty Road to Route 422.

The Margaret Road Intersection Improvement Project will provide roadway realignment to improve the existing intersection, sight distance and geometrics along the U.S. Route 422 corridor between Indiana and Kittanning. The project incorporates two new structures consisting of a two-span bridge and a concrete box culvert. The two-span bridge is over Cherry Run and spans State Route 2005, locally known as Margaret Road.

The project replaces an existing four-way intersection with a T-intersection relocated at a point west of the existing intersection. Numerous stormwater management facilities and new wetland areas will be constructed throughout the project limits. Contractor, Plum Contracting, Inc. of Pittsburgh will be completing this $25 million with a projected completion date of June 2025.

This project was funded through the Surface Transportation Program (STP) which provides flexible funding that may be used by States and localities for projects to preserve and improve the conditions and performance on any federal-aid highway, bridge and tunnel projects on any public road, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and transit capital projects, including intercity bus terminals.
