Gallaudet University proudly participated in the "Listen Up! Symposium," focusing on disability in higher education, at Austria's Johannes Kepler University Linz. The symposium featured participants from Austria, Bulgaria, and the U.S., including esteemed colleagues from Zero Project, Fulbright Austria, Deaf.BG.

Fiona Grugan (pictured above, left), Education Abroad and International Fellowships Manager for Gallaudet's Office of International Affairs, presented in a panel discussion moderated by MaƂgorzata Grobelna, program manager for Zero Project. The discussion revolved around accessibility, inclusive design, and the unique challenges and successes faced in higher education for individuals with disabilities. One of the key topics was the influence of international frameworks, such as the European Union's Disability Card and the Americans with Disabilities Act, on local practices in accessibility.

Ashod Derandonyan (picture above, right), a Fulbright scholar and a master's student in Public Administration at Gallaudet University, was the keynote speaker. Ashod emphasized the importance of strong Deaf leadership and sustainable international exchanges to support the Deaf community. His journey at Gallaudet University is part of a broader mission to lay the groundwork for future deaf leaders and English as a Second Language specialists in Bulgaria. Derandonyan highlighted how quality education for deaf students in Bulgaria will advance significantly by establishing a cadre of deaf specialists proficient in Bulgarian Sign Language. These specialists will bring back knowledge and insights from global connections and mentors, shaping practices back home and demonstrating that deaf individuals can thrive through sign language.

Reflecting on the event, Grugan expressed her commitment to being more intentional and collaborative in her approach to program design, inspired by the rich exchange of ideas and experiences at the symposium.

Gallaudet University is proud to have had such strong representation at the symposium and looks forward to continuing its work in fostering accessibility and inclusion in higher education globally.
