Argall, Watro Announce Economic Development Grants

HARRISBURG - Economic development projects in the greater Hazleton area and northern Schuylkill County are now reality thanks to $6.5 million in state grants. Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) and Rep. Dane Watro (R-116) worked with local leaders to secure this funding.

"Ranging from reclaiming abandoned mine lands in Hazleton for businesses and new housing to the Center for Education, Business and the Arts in Shenandoah, these projects will benefit residents of the 116th Legislative District for many years to come," said Watro. "Funding support from Harrisburg is so important in making local projects like these a reality and I was happy to assist in securing the grants."

"By funding these projects, we're helping local businesses create new, family-sustaining jobs and much-needed new housing and continuing the economic resurgence of our area," said Argall.

  • Downtown Shenandoah, Inc. was awarded $500,000 to continue the development of the Center for Business, Education, and Arts on property that was formerly a row of blighted buildings. This funding will be used to construct additional business incubator space and a commercial kitchen.
  • The Paul and Lisa DeAngelo Family Foundation was awarded $2 million to construct an indoor youth sports facility in Hazleton.
  • $2.5 million was awarded to construct the McAdoo Solar and Energy Storage Facility in Kline Township.
  • $750,000 was awarded to further construct the Hazleton Creek Commerce Center on reclaimed mine land. The center will ultimately encompass five industrial buildings and support thousands of jobs.
  • $750,000 was awarded to the Hazle Township Airport Beltway Development, which will include 5 retail sites and more than 300 housing units.

Funding was awarded through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which awards grants to economic development projects with a regional impact.
