Published on July 25, 2024

Planning a home renovation? No problem!

The City of Palo Alto is launching a new Over-the-Counter Residential Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Pilot Permit Program on August 1. This initiative aims to reduce permit processing times and enhance customer service for eligible single-family home renovations. Eligible applicants are matched up with a dedicated plan review team, facilitating a quicker and smoother permit process for a variety of home projects.

Approximately one-third of over 3,000 permit applications received at the Development Center are for residential MEP projects. With an Over-the-Counter appointment, move forward with a home renovation with ease. Supporting a range of projects, including water heater replacements, mechanical system installations or replacements, electrical service replacements up to 200 amps, and more, this effort seeks to expedite residential sustainability projects including whole home electrification, such as switching to electric appliances and other efficiencies, plus other home upgrades.

This new effort is the first in a series of permit changes planned, helping to inform future phases of improvements to streamline and fast track residential remodels and small commercial tenant improvements.
