The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reinforces the #ViajaSeguro [TravelSafe] campaign to kick off the 2024 holiday season

As from 1 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has bolstered the social media information campaign #ViajaSeguro [TravelSafe], aimed at all Spanish citizens planning to travel abroad in the coming months during the summer holidays.

This campaign emphasises two tools that the Ministry makes available to citizens: Travel Recommendations and the Travellers' Register.

Through the Ministry's website, citizens can access Travel Recommendations containing useful information for each country concerning the necessary travel documents, vaccinations and safety conditions. This is constantly updated with information provided by the Spanish embassies. There are also practical recommendations to help travellers who have chosen that country as their destination.

The Travellers' Register collects, with the highest possible confidentiality, the personal and travel data for people who voluntarily complete the forms. During an emergency, this facilitates their location and the provision of support. The #ViajaSeguro campaign highlights the advisability of using the Register to communicate travel information. It is free to use, and allows people to be located to check their status during emergencies due to natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.), armed conflicts and other events.

Lastly, the campaign's name stresses the importance of always travelling with medical or travel insurance to cover potential expenses arising from multiple incidents: from flight cancellations or suspension of transport services in the destination country for varying reasons to medical care needs arising from health problems, as well as hospitalisation due to accidents and medicalised repatriation. Having medical or travel insurance facilitates the necessary care in such circumstances, which in some countries can be extremely expensive.

In 2023, Spaniards made more than 19 million trips abroad. This year, with the European Football Championship in Germany until 14 July and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in France from 26 July to 8 September, this figure is expected to be higher.

Therefore, even greater efforts will be made to provide information for travellers via social media. The #ViajaSeguro campaign will be visible through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' social media accounts on X, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. The messages will also remind people that the 178 Spanish consulates abroad have 24-hour emergency telephone numbers to report any adverse travel-related circumstances. People also receive initial assistance through these hotlines and that of the Ministry's headquarters. These telephone numbers can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
