October 22: Mobile Career Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

MassHire Lowell will debut its new Mobile Career Center at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 5:30PM, on JFK Plaza at Lowell City Hall. This innovative career services vehicle was renovated by talented students from Greater Lowell Technical High School (GLTHS), whose skills and contributions will be recognized at the event.

The Mobile Career Center is designed to bring job search assistance to the residents of the eight communities within the MassHire Lowell service area, which includes Lowell, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, and Westford. By extending MassHire's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the Mobile Career Center will offer expanded in-person outreach and services to underserved communities.

Residents who visit the Mobile Career Center will have access to a variety of services, including:

• Job search advice
• On-the-spot resume critiques
• Current & upcoming training opportunities
• New job postings from Greater Lowell employers
• Registration for daily job search webinars
• Information on job fairs and recruitments

"The new Mobile Career Center allows MassHire to transport our services from our building to the neighborhoods," said Kevin E. Coughlin, Executive Director of the MassHire Greater Lowell Workforce Board.

"The Mobile Career Center is a great community asset," said Danielle McFadden, Chair of MassHire Greater Lowell Board of Directors, "and fulfills our Board's mission to serve all our communities."

Shannon Norton, Executive Director of the MassHire Lowell Career Center, said, "One of the best aspects about this project is the expansion of equitable services to underrepresented communities within the city. In addition, this project was designed to allow for green energy to be paramount during its reconstruction, as well as incorporating safety and design features that will ensure this Mobile Career Center will operate successfully for years to come."

The GLTHS Construction and Transportation & Manufacturing Clusters played a key role in transforming a utility bus, purchased from the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA), into a state-of-the-art mobile career center. The student-led renovations included new interior, batteries, tires, wood floors and cabinets, and new countertops for solar powered workstations. Students also installed a backup camera system, trailer hitch assembly, solar exterior motion lighting, and solar powered security camera system.

This student-led project exemplifies the strong community partnerships between MassHire Lowell and local institutions like GLTHS, which help to enhance workforce development opportunities across the region. Following the ceremony, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Mobile Career Center and see firsthand the impressive renovations made by GLTHS students.

The MassHire Lowell Mobile Career Center will next be seen at the Greater Lowell Veteran & Community Job Fair at Middlesex Community College in Lowell on November 19, 2024.
