Queens, N.Y. - The National Park Service (NPS) will begin demolishing Fort Tilden's building T-9 in late July. The work is expected to take 10 weeks and includes abatement before the demolition starts. All equipment, materials and work performed will be within the existing fencing surrounding Building T-9. Visitor access to the rest of Fort Tilden will not be impacted.

The building, which had been the site of several prominent art installations in recent years, was impacted by a fire in 2023. Although the National Park Service and many in the park partner community had hoped to one day see the rehabilitation of this historic structure, the impacts of the fire were too severe.

The building formerly served as a train garage when the site was an active military installation, and it is part of the Fort Tilden Historic District.
