EuroHPC JU in the starting blocks for creating AI Factories

Member States agree to launch AI Factories under the EuroHPC JU with a rolling call for proposals coming soon.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) Governing Board - the decision making body of the JU composed of the EU, its Member States and several other countries - included the AI Factories in the EuroHPC Work Programme 2024, which was published Friday, 26 July 2024.

This would enable Member States to build AI Factories around existing, upgraded or new EuroHPC supercomputers, equipped with AI capabilities. In addition to using these supercomputers for training their GenAI models, AI startups, SMEs and scientists will also have access to computing and storage services, programming facilities, skills development, access to talent and user support.

The rolling call for proposals is expected to open early September with the first cut-off date on the 01 November and subsequent cut-off dates every three months. The EuroHPC rolling call will provide financial contribution for applicants to acquire new or upgraded AI EuroHPC supercomputers, to build AI Factories around them and to network them at the EU level.

It is expected that an overall budget of around EUR 2 bn will be mobilised in the next two years, equally shared between the Member States and the EU.
