At-Large City Council Member Olgy Diaz on Proposed Amendments to the City Charter

TACOMA, Wash. - "I'm deeply disappointed the proposed form of government Charter amendment was not advanced to a vote of the people on the November ballot. As a Council, we had the opportunity to make significant strides in building belief and trust with our community. I heard more calls to advance a Mayor-Council form of government amendment than any other amendment considered this year. This feels like a missed opportunity. Additionally, I am disheartened in my colleagues' rejection of this amendment which consolidated several desired changes shared by the Charter Review Committee and requests from the public into a single ballot measure. This amendment would have more accurately represented the priorities I heard from our community than the Charter amendments that were ultimately sent to the ballot. I don't know if voters would have approved a change in form of government but, by not moving it forward, we've denied them the right to weigh in on how their government operates in service to the residents of Tacoma."
