DU Alert App helps ensure safety on campus

Davenport University was named the #1 safest campus in Michigan in 2021 and remains committed to the safety of its staff, faculty, students and visitors.

Under the leadership of Jackie Martinez, director of Public Safety for Davenport, the university is leveraging technology to connect the Davenport Community to the Department of Public Safety, especially in an emergency.

Martinez said she is excited to announce the availability of DU Alert, an app that can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. She said the app is essential for students and employees because it is a one-stop shop for everything you need to stay safe on campus.

"You no longer have to worry about saving emergency numbers or tracking down important safety resources," Martinez said. "The app provides instant access to all emergency plans and safety procedures, ensuring users have what they need to respond quickly during a crisis. Whether you're dealing with a crisis or need quick information, everything is right at your fingertips, making it easier to stay informed and protected."

According to Martinez, the project has been in the works for several years.

"I have to credit my predecessors for putting together a great team of advisors from many different departments who helped tie the software into our current systems," said Martinez. "I had great support from our Leadership team, Campus Life and the Communications team to help push this project over the finish line. Ultimately, the app supports the university's mission to prioritize the well-being of its members and promote a safe and responsive campus culture."

Martinez said the app will enhance overall safety and communication, creating a more secure campus environment.

Features of the app include:

Friend walks: Users can send their location to a friend in real-time so they can track them as they walk to their destination and can trigger a call to emergency services if necessary.

Call for Housing help: Quickly and easily call the RA on duty or Campus Life.

Emergency contacts:

• Call 911 or Public Safety: Users will be immediately connected to 911 or Public Safety.
• Twenty-four-hour crisis line: This crisis line is monitored by Wellness Center counselors.
• Report a tip:Users can report a possible crime and its location to Public Safety and even attach photos and videos.

Support resources:

• Sexual assault assistance:Includes resources for students and instructions on filing a report.
• Medical Services:Includes information on the Wellness Center and how to make an appointment to see a nurse practitioner.
• Counseling Services: Includes information on the Wellness Center and how to schedule an appointment with a counselor.

Emergency response plans:Users can view Davenport's emergency response plans to be prepared for an emergency like bomb threats, severe weather, fire and evacuation procedures.

Campus evacuation maps:Users can view evacuation maps for all DU campuses.

Martinez hopes the entire Davenport Community will commit to using the app as it will strengthen the university as a whole and ensure a swift, coordinated response to any situation.
