United Nations Human Rights Council

56th session

Annual full-day discussion on the human rights of women

Panel 2: Human Rights Economy and women human rights

EU Statement

28 June 2024

Mr. President,

The European Union warmly welcomes this timely panel discussion.

We are experiencing a global backlash against gender equality. Gender equality is the bedrock of the international human rights system, which the EU works tirelessly to realize in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Current macroeconomic systems still contain structural barriers that prevent the realization of gender equality and the full enjoyment of all human rights for all women and girls. Moreover, unsustainable and unprecedented levels of global public debt, along with a lack of sustainable development, disproportionately affect women and girls.

It is integral to human rights economy to take steps towards eliminating gender-based discrimination and reducing gender inequalities through a human rights based approach. The EU is ready to engage with all partners, to move towards a human rights economy, by dismantling structural barriers and other impediments to equality, justice, and gender-equal, sustainable growth for all.

The EU remains fully committed to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs. We believe that the realisation of all human rights is a pre-condition to achieving inclusive, sustainable development and economic growth for everyone, everywhere.

Mr. President, how can macroeconomic systems be transformed, through the human rights economy, to advance women's rights?
