ARUP Named a Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists

ARUP Laboratories has earned a second Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award from the League of American Bicyclists in recognition of the company's commitment to employee health and wellness and its contributions to the national movement to build a more bicycle-friendly America.

ARUP joins more than 1,300 businesses nationwide and 16 in Utah receiving the recognition. Winners include bike shops, hospitals, government agencies, and nonprofits, all united to transform American workplaces to be more welcoming to employees who bike. ARUP encourages bicycling as a commuting option and provides amenities such as a bike storage facility that offers heightened security and weather protection for up to 32 bikes, ebikes, and other larger cycles, showers and changing rooms, and additional secured and covered bike parking at all buildings. Employees are also allowed to keep bikes in some workspaces and use charging stations for ebikes.

"I see biking as a solution to Utah's air quality issues, traffic trouble, and parking problems. Additionally, it's beneficial for overall wellness and reduces stress. Having the on-site bike facility and showers makes riding into work an easy decision for me," said Malia Deshotel, ARUP's cycling club lead. She added that ARUP's cycling club has a dedicated Teams channel with nearly 130 members who share routes, swap free gear, and encourage cyclists to ride together.

"ARUP's location in Research Park at the University of Utah is beautiful and is ideal for mountain biking, touring canyons on roads, and commuting to downtown Salt Lake City," Deshotel said.

She added that the award means the company is contributing to the cycling community at ARUP, a group that is always welcoming new members.

"I'm passionate about cycling and want to share that with others," Deshotel said.

ARUP was first honored with the Bronze BFB award in 2020. As part of the BFB network, ARUP has access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more welcoming to employees who bike.

ARUP provides a unique environment to support employees' and their families' health and wellness with benefits that include an on-site Family Health Clinic and Wellness Center with physicians, mental health therapists, a registered dietitian, and an exercise specialist, as well as weekly yoga classes, massage therapy, and an on-site gym.

"We are honored to provide comprehensive, whole-person care in the corporate space with resources and teams to empower our employees and their families," said Sara Hillring, MS, RDN, CD, SFP-MRC, ARUP's wellness supervisor. "The healthcare space can be challenging to navigate, but we aim to fill in the gaps and provide a variety of resources."
