Whitby, Ontario - The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

"On the 11th hour of the 11th day of 11th month each year, Canadians pause for a moment of silent reflection in honour of the brave men and women who have served-and stand ready to serve-our country in times of war and peace.

We wear a powerful symbol, close to our hearts, to show respect and gratitude for the Veterans and active-duty members who have fought to defend our freedoms and values.

We wear it to preserve the memory of those whose lives were lost or forever changed, ensuring their sacrifice is not forgotten.

We wear it to acknowledge the cost of war and the importance of peace.

And we wear it to advocate for improving the well-being of service members, past and present.

I encourage you to offer a moment of silence this morning at 11 a.m. Flags at Regional Headquarters are lowered to half-mast today in honour of the service and sacrifice of our country's Veterans and regular and reserve force members.
