Demographic events, 2023
Total increase highest in the 2nd quarter
Natural decrease and positive net migration were recorded in 2023 (−4,551 and 11,528 persons, respectively). Total increase was 6,977.
Births peak in the summer, deaths in the winter
For the seventh consecutive year more people died than were born.
Most of the 16,989 children born in 2023 were born in the third quarter (4,557). Among 21,540 deaths, most people died in the first quarter (5,844) and the fewest in the third quarter (4,890).
Natural decrease was recorded in all four quarters of the year and in 2023 for the first time also in all months. The number of deaths exceeded the number of births the least in the third quarter (−333). In the first quarter natural change of population was most markedly negative (−1,793 or −3.4 per 1,000 population), simiral was also in the last quarter (−1,694 or −3.2 per 1,000 population).
Most weddings in summer months
6,388 couples married, 6% fewer than in the previous year. Most marriages were recorded in the third quarter (2,570). The month with the most weddings was September (995 couples were married).
2,165 couples divorced, 1% more than in the previous year. Most divorces were recorded in the second quarter (600).
Net migration positive in all quarters
Net migration was positive in all quarters. It was the highest in the second quarter: 3,994 more residents immigrated to Slovenia than emigrated from it.
Most, 28%, internal migrations, i.e. changes of settlement of residence within Slovenia, were recorded in the 1st quarter of the year. In total, 16% fewer internal migrations were recorded than in 2022.
Total increase was positive in all four quarters and at the annual level (6,977).
