City Sends Letters of Support Urging Governor to Sign Traffic Safety Bills

The City of Malibu submitted letters of support on September 5, 2024 urging Governor Gavin Newsom to sign two crucial pieces of legislation that will support Malibu's ongoing fight for a safer Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). SB1297 and SB1509, for which the City sent delegations to Sacramento to advocate for, both passed successfully out of the California Legislature last week and await final approval by the Governor.

SB1297 (Senator Ben Allen and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin), would allow speed camera systems at five locations on PCH in Malibu that have the highest incidence of speed-related collisions and fatalities. Speed safety cameras are estimated to reduce roadway fatalities and injuries by 20% to 37%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SB 1509, the "NOT in California Act," (Senator Henry Stern, co-authored by Senator Ben Allen, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, and several others), aims to enhance road safety by designating repeat violations of driving 26 MPH or more over the speed limit as a two-point violation on a driver's driving record.

These two important bills are part of the City's "all of the above" strategy for addressing PCH safety, which includes technology and infrastructure, increased traffic enforcement, outreach and education, and supporting key legislation.
