On Thursday, August 1, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department held a Push-In Ceremony for its newest aerial apparatus, also known as a ladder truck, at Fire Station #11 (3020 Riverside Drive). You can watch the full ceremony here.

The ceremonial Push-In dates to the 1800s when crews returned from a call on horse-drawn equipment, that the horses were unable to push back into the fire station.

"Aerial ladders are instrumental in the rescue and recovery efforts of victims who may become trapped in a high-rise structure," said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. "We also utilize aerial ladders for the rescue of victims who may experience a medical emergency where they may be on a roof top. Most high & low angle rope rescue emergencies depend on the use of aerial ladders to assist with rescues."

The brand new $1.3 million ladder truck was funded mostly by Special Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST).

"Public safety has always been at the top of our priority list, and thanks to our penny sales tax, we're able to put more money towards funding public safety," said Mayor Lester Miller. "It's essential that our departments have the resources they need to help keep our community safe."

There are a total of 8 aerial apparatuses serving Macon-Bibb County. They are strategically placed throughout the county to provide emergency response for high rise fires and rescues.
