Back to School with Denton Parks and Recreation

It's that time of year again! As you are Back to School shopping and getting prepared for the year we have a few things from Parks and Recreation to keep in mind! We have so many options for students, including everything from having fun at our Back to School bash to having somewhere to go afterschool with our Afterschool Action Site program. Denton Parks and Recreation is where you belong this school year!

The Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center invites Denton ISD students to participate in the annual Back to School Bash on Aug. 5, 2024. The extended event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a variety of engaging activities such as games, a bounce house, vendors, seminars, free haircuts, and manicures, culminating in a school supply distribution. In the evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., students can enjoy a lively DJ dance party with snacks, food, ice cream, and games for those who prefer not to dance, along with DJ/Karaoke sessions.

This event aims to bring the community together and ensure that students are well-prepared and excited for the upcoming school year. We are seeking support from community members in the form of school supply donations or volunteering. Your contributions can help make this event a success and provide essential resources to students in need. Please consider donating school supplies, giveaways, or monetary contributions, or volunteering your time on the day of the event. Together, we can make a positive impact on our students' educational journey.

Speaking of donations, this year Denia Recreation Center hosted a Back to School Supply Drive in coordination with MLK Jr Rec Center's Back to School Bash. Multiple Parks & Recreation locations hosted donation boxes from the end of June through July 19, collecting over 700 donations. Many of these donations were turned in by our Denton community members. Our goal is to help support communities throughout Denton get prepared for a successful school year and we thank our community members for making that possible!

Looking to stay engaged throughout the school year either after school or on the weekends? We have many different programs offered to you!

After School Action Site (ASAS) - Starts Aug. 7

We're the perfect balance between extended learning and fun. In addition to homework supervision, we offer recreational activities, intramural leagues, arts and crafts, field trips, "brainy bowl" and more!

Each day we pick up students from school and take them to the site per the list below:

North Lakes Rec Center: Evers, Ginnings, Newton Rayzor, Shultz
Denia Rec Center: Borman, Houston, LA Nelson, McNair, Ryan, Denton Classical
MLK Jr. Rec Center: Hodge, Alexander, Pecan Creek, Rivera, Stephens

Kids Rock - Starts back in Sept.

Each month, kids enjoy a night out while parents enjoy the night off. Our experienced staff plan each month around a unique theme, then create play stations that include games and activities, mini-sports tournaments, unique inflatable fun, ping-pong, and video games on a large screen. Of course, it's never a party without a DJ and dance contests! No need to buy dinner on the way because we provide 2 slices of pizza and a drink. We will also sell concessions and glow products. Preregistration is required.

Mobile Rec - Starts back in Sept.

Every second and fourth Saturday we will be bringing recreation to you by popping up at a park or recreation center near you! Join us for games, sports, music, arts & crafts, and more! We are always on the go so chances are we are stopping by a location near you. Stay tuned for a schedule of our pop ups!

Teen Night Out, Ages 13-18 years old

Looking to get your teen involved? This is a great opportunity for them to meet new friends while enjoying different games and a variety of activities. Teen night will be hosted at Denia Recreation Center and will have different themes for each night.

Teen Lock In, Ages 13-18 years old

Another great way to get your teen involved is through our teen lock in. This is a great opportunity for groups to stay overnight at the Denia Recreation Center, providing a safe space to socialize and build friendships. Once checked in, they will remain at the recreation center until morning. We will have a variety of games and activities for the teens.

We are so excited for the kiddos to be back where they belong with Denton Parks and Recreation this school year. We are on a mission to Unite, Grow, and Play through our recreation programs and hope to see your students back this year!
