Chicago Man Charged in Burglary of State’s Attorney’s Office

COOK COUNTY, IL - A 44-year-old Chicago man has been charged with burglary and theft after a Sheriff's Police investigation identified him as the person who removed laptops and other items from a Cook County State's Attorney's office, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

On July 23, Sheriff's Police Detectives were notified of a theft that occurred at the State's Attorney's office located in the Criminal Court Administration Building at 2650 South California Avenue in Chicago. Three laptops and other items were reported missing from the 12th floor office.

Security video footage showed a person leaving the building on the night of July 22 with the missing items. During the course of their investigation, Detectives identified the individual as Jordan Jose Ocampo, from the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue.

Detectives learned that Ocampo has been detained at Cook County Jail since Aug. 14 on unrelated aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and attempted criminal sexual assault charges. Detectives met with Ocampo at the Jail on Aug. 20. After reading him his Miranda warning, Ocampo admitted he was in the building on the night of July 22, took the laptops and the other items, and then left the building.

On Aug. 24, the State's Attorney's Office approved Class 3 Felony Theft and Class 2 Felony Burglary charges against Ocampo. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 25 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the Government in a court of law.
