Work is closing in - literally - for an expansion project that is dramatically growing the space for Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at two of Tampa International Airport's Airsides.
Airside A, which opened in 1995, and Airside E, opened in 2002, both were designed and built prior to 9/11. That means they don't have sufficient screening space for modern TSA security checkpoints and require the overhaul, which started last year.
Now the expansions have moved on from foundations and framing and are in the process of being enclosed to move ahead with interior work.
At Airside A, crews are installing windows on the departure level that span nearly the entire floor-to-ceiling height (17 feet, 8 inches) of the new screening area. The roof of the 20,560-square-foot space is also getting its rounded, mansard roofing, a signature feature of Airside A.
Airside E's checkpoint also is nearly fully enclosed, including clerestory windows above the space and a sloped area that will lead to aircraft gates. The checkpoint addition will be 19,542 square feet when completed.
Both checkpoints will feature seven screening lanes, queuing space and a recomposure area to collect baggage and put on shoes and belts. The spaces also will include offices for TSA staff.
Interior finish work is slated for the coming months, with infrastructure for the new screening equipment being built into the floor and drywall being installed. Tile and carpet will go in before the space opens, with work expected to be completed in summer 2025.
The project has a construction cost of $65.1 million and is being funded almost entirely with bonds and $525,000 in FDOT grants. The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board of Directors approved funding in August 2023.
