Saturday Update Beryl: What residents need to know

The City of Galveston is providing a Saturday afternoon update on Tropical Storm Beryl and the most important things for residents to know ahead of the storm.

In an 11 a.m. call, meteorologists from the National Weather Service said the agency is more confident about a landfall just south of Matagorda Bay late Sunday night and into Monday. The storm is likely to intensify into a hurricane and a hurricane watch remains in effect from the mouth of the Rio Grande to San Luis Pass.

Gusty winds, elevated tides

Galveston is expected to feel effects from the storm, including elevated tides and tropical storm gusts of wind. The tides are expected to be 2'-4', which is comparable to or less than Tropical Storm Alberto.

Still, there is likely to be tidal flooding in low-lying areas. Residents should be careful not to drive through standing water and should find higher areas to park vehicles on Sunday night into Monday. Understand your elevation and risks by using the most recent storm as a comparable event.

Given the winds, residents should also secure any loose items that could blow or float, including boats and patio furniture. Per city ordinance, construction sites and portable bathrooms must be secure. Companies and contractors that do not secure these sites may be subject to fines.

City services - trash delayed

Trash services will be pushed back one day this week because of Tropical Storm Beryl. All other city services will operate as normal on Monday.

Monday's route will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday's route will be collected Wednesday and so on. Residents are responsible for securing their carts during the storm. We are anticipating tropical storm force winds, which will blow carts left unsecured.

For Monday's route, please secure your trash cans and do not place them at the curb or pickup location until Tuesday morning.
