Hot spell forecast for region

The National Weather Service in Seattle has forecast a heat wave for Puget Sound Sunday, July 7, to Tuesday, July 9, with temperatures expected to be in the upper 80s the first two days and possibly the 90s on Tuesday.

While not as bad as the 100+ degree temperatures hitting California this week, Bellevue's heat can cause health problems, especially for the very young, very old and people with certain medical conditions.

The King County Regional Homelessness Authority has initiated a heat activation as well. They have a web page listing public spaces that can be used for cooling and tips for being prepared for hot weather.

Anyone who will be outside for extended periods should drink plenty of water, seek shade whenever possible, use sunscreen with a high SPF and be alert to signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

If you're inside without air conditioning, you may want to seek an alternative, such as a mall, movie theater, restaurant or library.

Water options and safety

For those who want to swim, lifeguards are on duty daily at Meydenbauer Bay, Newcastle, Enatai, Chism and Clyde beach parks, noon to 7 p.m. For more details, consult Beach Parks.

The water features at the Crossroads water spray playground and Downtown Park's Inspiration Playground offer some cooling, particularly for kids, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.

If you choose to swim in unmonitored river or lake locations, the water may still be quite cold, so use caution and wear a personal flotation device.

Fire risk

According to the National Weather Service, hot conditions, low relative humidity, and unstable conditions will lead to elevated to critical fire weather concerns, particularly this weekend into next week.
