Nationwide alert on fake NEFs phishing scam affecting federal court practitioners

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa has issued an alert about a widespread phishing scam targeting attorneys and law firms through fake Notices of Electronic Filing (NEFs). The scam, which has been reported across the nation, aims to deceive recipients into responding to fraudulent NEF emails. Once a response is sent, recipients typically receive a follow-up email with a link to a supposed case document, which instead directs users to a malicious website.

To ensure the security of your practice and sensitive client information, attorneys are advised to remain vigilant:

  • Verify NEFs: Confirm any case-related notifications directly within the official Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system rather than through external email communications.
  • Avoid suspicious links: Refrain from clicking any links or downloading attachments within emails that appear questionable or are sent from unrecognized sources.
  • Report suspicious emails: If you encounter a suspicious NEF, notify your IT department or contact the relevant federal court's support team.

The Iowa State Bar Association encourages all members practicing in federal courts to stay alert to this ongoing phishing threat and to maintain stringent email and cybersecurity practices to avoid falling victim to this scam.
