According to the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network, an American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds. To raise awareness of prevention efforts and victim assistance programs, Defense Logistics Agency Distribution is engaging employees in creative ways.
The United States federal government recognizes April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month created to raise awareness to promote awareness, provide training and conduct outreach to prevent sexual violence and to support those who have experienced it. According to Dawn Birks, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Distribution East, sexual assault is a topic that deserves year-round attention. It is for that reason Birks says the "Teal Tuesdays" and "#NotJustApril" campaigns were created.
"Teal ribbons are a nationally recognized symbol of support for sexual assault survivors," Birks said. "Wearing the color teal is a meaningful representation of that support. The #NotJustApril campaign is designed to remind people that sexual assault is an issue that needs to be addressed year-round."
Throughout the month of November, Birks and Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Distribution West, Kelly Villalobos, plan to set up tables at the DLA Distribution headquarters building and DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, on Tuesdays and are advertising a virtual "turkey trot" scheduled for Nov. 22.
