In recognition of North Port's 65th anniversary this year, the City recently launched a new podcast series focused on preserving our oral history for future generations.

The "Voices of North Port" podcast features longtime residents and employees who have made significant contributions to the City, and creates an audio archive that preserves the living histories and personal stories that shaped our city's identity. North Port was founded in 1959, creating the unique opportunity to talk with residents who have been here nearly since the beginning or have played a significant role in its history.

So far, the podcast has featured longtime residents such as Joan Morgan and Deputy Police Chief Chris Morales. Another notable guest is James Henry, the original pilot of the iconic North Port hot air balloon that flew the skies from 1982 to 2002.

Each episode, hosted by Community Engagement Coordinator Jane Akins, explores the guest's background, experiences in the community, personal reflections, careers and more.

"As a new North Port resident myself, it's been fascinating to meet the people and hear the stories that have made the city what it is today," Akins said. "We hope North Port residents enjoy diving deeper into North Port's unique history with us."

"Voices of North Port" is available on the North Port Podcast Network. To listen and learn more, visit NorthPortFL.gov/Podcasts or find it on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and other audio services.
