2 Jul 2024, 13:28

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Wednesday the 3rd of July to resume its discussion on enabling community inclusion for people with disabilities with DESSA (Disability Equality Specialist Support Agency).

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House from 17:30 to 20:30

The following representatives from DESSA are due to appear:
• Brian Miller
• Alice Griffin

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said, 'We welcome the opportunity to meet with DESSA and discuss the critical topic of community inclusion for people with disabilities.'

'We want to make Ireland a more open and accessible place to live, and this is an important conversation to have to achieve this. DESSA's purpose is to work to create a society where people with disabilities and their families can live with full equality.

'We are going to hear about two of their ongoing projects. The 'Empowering Parents Programme' is an advocacy and capacity building initiative for parents of children with disabilities. The second project is 'Community Inclusion, Capacity & Connection: A Community Development Approach to Local Area Co-ordination.'

'DESSA do important work in striving to ensure that people with disabilities can not only use their voices but also be heard. We are really looking forward to hearing their perspectives and knowledge on this matter.'
