HUD Announces More Than $22 Million to Combat Housing Discrimination in America

Grants will support fair housing education, outreach, testing, and enforcement activities to end racial discrimination in America's housing system.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced the availability of $22,241,793 to fair housing organizations across the nation to bolster ongoing efforts to address housing discrimination. Funds announced today through HUD's Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) will support a variety of activities, including fair housing education and outreach, testing and enforcement. HUD's commitment to address housing discrimination supports steps by the Biden-Harris Administration to aggressively combat and end racial discrimination in America's housing system and ensure every community does its part to expand equity in housing for all.

"At HUD, one of the cornerstones of our mission is to root out all forms of discrimination in housing so that no one is treated unfairly," said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. "To accomplish this mission, we work with local partners from coast to coast. The $22 million we are making available today will give even more support to our partners as they enforce the Fair Housing Act."

Each year, HUD makes funding available to support organizations that enforce the nation's fair housing laws and policies, as well as educate the public, housing providers, and local governments about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. This is part of HUD's goal to eliminate housing discrimination, promote economic opportunity, and achieve diverse, inclusive communities by leading the nation in the enforcement, administration, development, and public understanding of federal fair housing policies and laws.

"HUD's partnership with fair housing organizations is critical to ensuring fair housing awareness and enforcement of our laws," said HUD Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Diane M. Shelley. "The grants made possible by this funding will strengthen this partnership and ensure that fair housing reaches all of our communities."

The categories of grants being made available today are:

• Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI) - $8,350,000 - EOI grants provide funds to eligible organizations to develop, implement, carry out and coordinate education and outreach programs designed to inform members of the public concerning their rights and obligations under the provisions of the Fair Housing Act. • Education and Outreach Initiative - Test Coordinator Training (EOI-TCT) - $500,000 - EOI-TCT grants provide funds to eligible organizations to support fair housing training courses in fair housing testing. Notice of Funding Opportunity FR-6800-N-71-A
• Fair Housing Organizations Initiative (FHOI) - $3,700,000 - FHOI grants provide funds to eligible organizations to build their capacity and effectiveness to conduct fair housing enforcement related activities or to establish and support new organizations to engage in fair housing work, particularly in unserved and underserved jurisdictions. • Private Enforcement Initiative (PEI) - $9,691,793 - PEI grants provide funds to eligible organizations to conduct testing, investigate violations and obtain enforcement of the rights granted under the Fair Housing Act or substantially equivalent State or local laws. Applications for EOI, EOI-TCT and FHOI must be received by November 19, 2024. Applications for PEI must be received by November 25, 2024.
