Panto stars and world streetdance champions line up for Christmas countdown

The countdown to Christmas in Portsmouth's main shopping areas will be officially marked this week with a range of sparkling events from Christmas Lights Switch On Parties, the We Shine Art and Light Festival, Christmas markets and the return of Portsmouth on Ice.

Sponsored by HSDC and Toob, the Christmas Lights Switch On Parties are hosted by Mark Collins from Greatest Hits Radio and features stars from panto including Lorraine Stanley (Eastenders) and George Sampson (Britain's Got Talent), world streetdance champions FLAWLESS , Portsmouth FC heroes including manager John Mousinho, performances by community groups, a special appearance of Father Christmas, walk about entertainers and a dazzling finale.

• On Thursday 21 November with the Southsea Christmas Lights Switch On Party and the opening of the We Shine Art and Light Festival where the streets and buildings of Portsmouth will be transformed into a night-time gallery.
• On Friday 22 November, the Christmas lights will be switched in Cosham High Street at a glittering carol concert with the Salvation Army band and the We Create Market will also open for late night shopping in the city centre.
• On Saturday 23 November the Portsmouth Christmas Lights Party takes place in Commercial Road, alongside the official opening of the Portsmouth Christmas Market and Portsmouth on Ice.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of the council with responsibility for Economic Development said:

" We have a great lineup of festive events throughout Portsmouth to kick off the Christmas season. I encourage all residents to join in the fun and support our local high street businesses."
