Mayor Mantello, Chief DeWolf Ramping Up Enforcement Against Illegal Fireworks

TROY, NY (July 2) - Mayor Mantello and Chief DeWolf announced today that Troy PD and City officials are ramping up enforcement efforts beginning this week and continuing throughout the summer to reduce disruptions in the community caused by illegal fireworks. The administration also intends to build awareness regarding illegal vs. legal fireworks in New York State.

Only certain types of fireworks have been legalized in NYS- they are limited to only handheld sparklers and ground-based fireworks that emit showers of sparks, audible crackling, or whistling noises with smoke.

Fireworks that launch into the air are NOT legal in New York.

We ask that you be respectful of your neighbors and those within our community. Illegal fireworks pose a fire and safety hazard, in addition to being a nuisance to people and animals. We encourage you to attend a professional firework display.

For more information regarding firework regulations and safety, please visit: https://www.dhses.ny.gov/sparkling-devices-information. Residents can report issues or concerns relating to illegal fireworks use to the Troy Police Department's non-emergency number at (518) 270-4411. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
