Monmouth County to conduct mosquito control
operation in Oceanport on Sept. 5

OCEANPORT, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that due to evidence of West Nile virus, a mosquito control operation targeting adult mosquitoes will take place in Oceanport from 4:30-6:30 a.m. Sept. 5, weather permitting.

"Due to evidence of West Nile virus in the area, the Mosquito Control Division will treat the peninsula above Monmouth Avenue as well as Gooseneck Point Road," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "The County offers courtesy inspections where an inspector can visit your property to look for standing water sources that support mosquito larvae. The Division will be applying Zenivex using truck-mounted Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) equipment mounted in the bed of a pick-up truck.

"Mid-August through mid-September is traditionally the peak season for mosquito-borne disease (West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis), the Division advises all residents to protect themselves with repellent and/or to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors," said Commissioner Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Mosquito Control Division. "Residents can help 'Fight the Bite' by using the Mosquito Control checklistto find and eliminate all the places where mosquitos breed around homes and other structures."

Pyrethroids have been recommended for Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) mosquito control in New Jersey by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's current evaluation considers pyrethroid-containing products to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people when used properly as part of an integrated mosquito control program.
