Metropolitan Council Grant Supports Cleanup for 1570 White Bear Avenue Redevelopment Project

The Metropolitan Council recently awarded Livable Communities grants totaling nearly $1.5 million for assessing and cleaning up contaminated land for redevelopment.

The single biggest award went to the Gloryville project in the City of Saint Paul. The property, located at 1570 White Bear Avenue, received a $1 million cleanup grant to address the contamination in the soil and soil vapor due to a previous use as a gas station.

The planned redevelopment of the now vacant 2.2-acre site will bring 87 affordable apartments, over 25,000 square feet of commercial space, and 16 full-time jobs to the Greater East Side neighborhood.

"The proposed projects will help create more housing choice and affordable housing in the region, add living wage jobs, and improve connections between housing, jobs, and regional amenities," said Lisa Barajas, director of the Met Council's Community Development division.
