Dec. 17, 2024
HARRISBURG - State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) today announced he has been appointed to serve as the Republican chairman of the House Transportation Committee for the 2025-26 Legislative Session. This is the second consecutive session in which he has held this position.
"I'm honored to be asked to again lead this committee, especially after the work we did during the 2023-24 session," said Benninghoff. "We moved 61 pieces of legislation, 17 of which became law, which is why I'm looking forward to again working with my fellow chairman, state Rep. Ed Neilson (D-Philadelphia).
"We have some unique transportation challenges compared to our neighboring states, and I'm looking forward to taking on those challenges. Pennsylvania has more than 120,000 linear miles of highways and more than 25,400 state-owned bridges (third-highest number of bridges in the country), all negatively impacted by wear and tear, in addition to our wide fluctuations in seasonal temperatures.
"In addition, changing work habits and the move to electric vehicles (EVs) both impact the amount of funding that is available to maintain our transportation infrastructure. A great example of the latter is FedEx, UPS and Amazon all making major commitments to adding EVs to their fleets.
"Transportation is very much a changing industry. We as a General Assembly must work with the administration to meet those changes and recognize the transportation needs of every Pennsylvanian, both rural and urban, in a fair and equitable manner."
Since first being elected, Benninghoff has served in leadership as majority leader, majority whip and majority chairman of the Policy Committee. He has also chaired the State Government and Finance committees.
